Animal Wednesday - Hybrid Duck

While we were out birding yesterday we found this odd looking duck amongst a large migrating flock. It's reddish bill is what caught my attention first. It had a big white area on its side.  It is obviously a hybrid but we can't decide just what mix it is.  I had to paint a portrait of it so I could rememeber what it looked like. Happy Animal Wednesday to you all. I hope you see some interesting sights this spring.

Its fun to see the different ducks at the duck pond by us. Good job on recording this. I was outside working in the yard. Came in for a mini break.. Had to see who was up to what. :))

I love your little duck.I've been staying with my mom who lives on an inlet full on little ducks and geese. I love the quacking and honking.
Thank-you for your help with animal wed

Those hybrids always throw me for a loop when I try to ID them. Nice sketch.

the only duck that comes close in my Birds of North America book, is a Common Merganser...google it and see if it looks like your duck!!!

I can just see you out there, painting in the open air like Monet. I love to be there too!

Hi Lisa...I love ducks, they always look so odd.
It is good to keep a record, we soon forget (at least I do).

Hey, great duck, they are so fun to watch. I liked the daffodils posted Tuesday too. Hope you are doing really well, miss checking in more regular with all. Have a great weekend!

Julie, you might be right as to half of the parentage of this duck. We too thought about Common merganzer.

I love it when two different ducks mess around and end up with a beauty like this ;)

Our local pond (which became more than a lake in the flooding) has a lone swan on it. It makes me sad to wonder what happened to his/her mate.

I am so behind in blog-reading and commenting! This is one strange-looking duck! Have you found it in your bird book? I used to do that, too; see a bird, then run home and look it up. I identified a "shrike" once that flew over our pond. That's a weird bird.
Your little vase of daffodils are very cute, as is your Easter Bunny.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a red-billed duck before. That must have been very neat to see.

I like him an awful lot. He has a modest look about him despite the red beak!
