Animal Wednesday - Paper Wasp

There is some sort of paper wasp nesting in a clay pot that is part of a wreath I made some years ago. The wasps don't bother anyone. There are two guards. I haven't seen the other wasps come to the nest. I forget about for the most part. I thought it was sort of interesting that there is a lot of debris at the bottom of the pot under the nest. One thing looks like it could be a larva. I am not sure though.  I haven't noticed this debris under a normally placed nest. Maybe it all blows away or blends in with the ground too much to see it other places.
Happy Animal Wednesday.

Hi Lisa,

I find wasps fascinating. There paper nests are just so beautiful.
I have several nests at the moment. Found one in the copse today. I think the warm Spring we had allowed more queen's to survive.......

Lovely capture for your journal.......

Wow Lisa, fabulous job on this!! Love that pot. I guess I don't find wasps to exciting because they like to nest under my wicker chairs on the porch. It's shocking to sit down and have a wasp fly out from under you. lol

unusual painting. wasps nests are wonderful. in the winter when the wasps have gone you can pick them off and use the nest for decorative purposes. it is actually paper, isnt it? chewed grasses etc, chewed by the wasps to make the nest.

Very cool! Love your observations and you're probably right about the debris not being easily seen.

I don't know as I've ever gotten close enough to observe one objectively. Usually I'm shrieking and running the other direction. You did a great job of capturing it in paint.

Dear Lisa,
A very interesting animal for Animal Wednesday. Like Cheryl I think the paper nests are beautiful. After frost I bring them in for my Winter decorations...
Wonderful watercolor. Your journal is an amazing work of art.
