This summer I saw a nest with young pileated woodpeckers hanging out the hole begging for food. I tried a sketch without looking at them and no picture. I was sad I couldln't capture it quite right. Then I was reading _Living Bird_ magazine and voile they had a small photo in there of nearly the same sight I saw. I got busy and tried another drawing. Better but maybe next time I can paint on location with good paper. We can always hope.
Happy Animal Wednesday. For more animal sketches and stories go to Auntie Mim's.

I always have to look at something to be able to draw it, otherwise my stuff turns out looking cartoonish. I've always mourned my lack of imperfect recall.
I like your woodpeckers. We used to hear them in our backyard all the time, but not much in the last few years. Their trees probably fell down in a storm.
I love this piece.
This is beautimus!!!! HAW!!!
I am always so impressed by your watercolors paintings (or are they acrylics?) Whatever, they are so well done. Glad you found the picture to help finish this art work. Wow. HAW Lisa!
This is gorgeous! Your work always amazes me....
HAW!

You were meant to paint those Piliateds and it is beautiful. I love when I see them by us in WI.
HAW
Lisa, Such a lovely painting.
You really are good at drawing birds.....
Something that I have struggled with.
Very nice Lisa. I love your paintings too. Its not easy doing birds from life as they move so fast so I take photos and paint later. :)
wow - lucky us that you got to paint these. I think it 's so hard to paint birds, their feathers confuse me. but these are awesome
Judging by the bird I saw in my yard last spring, this is a good painting of them. I haven't seen him since. Wonder where he went?
I can't paint from memory either. I have to look at a picture of something in order to get it right. You did a good job here.
Left or right doesn't matter which way you take this is a stunning result!
I can't make anything by heart either have to see a picture or the real thing.
have a wonderful day:)
You are GOOD! Wow!
Pileated Woodpeckers are amazing and your drawing is wonderful....

Awesome woodpeckers, Lisa!!! Love the color in them!
We see these birds quite often, but I've never seen a nest before. Beautifully rendered!
Lisa, this is wonderful! You always capture birds, bugs and butterflies so well.
I start a full time job soon and I hope I can get back to regular blogging once I have a set schedule. I miss everyone!
I can't post about it on my blog yet because I haven't given notice to the market. They look at my blog!
Great job, really.
I like them very much. Good job.
We will get one of those passing through every once in a while but I've never seen young ones. Wonderful!
What a great painting. Thank you.
