Animal Wednesday - Calliope Hummingbird

We have had high drama in the birding commmunity this holiday season. The first State of Indiana record of a Calliope Hummingbird was discovered.

It is coming to the feeders of a very gracious couple that lives about a 2.5 hour drive from our house. After the Christmas hooplah my DB and I drove over to the residence and saw the bird. This is a watercolor picture I painted for the couple as a thank you for opening their garden to a bunch of rabid bird listers. The lady of the house named the bird Frosty because the picture she posted on FB had frost all around the bird.
I hope everyone has survived the holidays and are looking forward to the New Year. Cheers and Happy Animal Wednesday.

What a lovely thank you for this couple. How fun to go see it in person. A true Birder. :)

Lisa,

Firstly will the bird be ok? It is obviously unusual for it to be seen in this part of USA, at this time of year?

You are so kind to give the couple one of your lovely sketches.
The watercolour is so pretty......

The last two weeks have seen me birdwatching. Red Kites are in my area......so beautiful.
Nella and I visit the fields each day to watch them soar above us. I love to listen to their beautiful calls.......

Great sketch and what a wonderful thank you to the generous folks that let you back there. I have to agree with Cheryl's comments about hoping he'll be okay as this is not a good time of year to be in Ohio!

Sorry—Indiana!

Wonderful painting and a beautiful gesture to the lucky couple hosting the bird. Poor little thing in that cold weather. Let us know any further news on it. Really exciting to hear about this.

Hummers move so fast that I don't think I could tell one from another. I'm happy that you got to see it and your watercolor is outstanding.

Lisa, wow....what a miracle at Winter to see this little one. The people who have tried to look after him/her are true heroes to me. And you, m'dear, with your fantastic watercolour....what at tribute. I hope this wee *Hummer* does survive ....seeing your art has warmed my heart....and reinforced my belief that there are many people who truly care...

Sending you warm hugs from foggy San Francisco. May 2012 bring us ALL health and joy.

Love,

♥ Robin ♥

That bird is very beautiful. As are you. I have learned more about birds than I ever could have thought from your blog.
