This morning I got to thinking about birds (no surprise here) and their bills. Bird's bills are as varied as the birds themselves. Some are very colorful. I thought I would do quite a few bills on one page. When I got started I realized if I didn't put the heads on too they would really look odd. So it all became more involved than what I originally expected to do.
After that I got to thinking about all the details I like to put onto my sketches. One thing leads to another. I just love details. Altoon Sultan at Studio and Garden is a great artist and I love the way she writes about art. Today she wrote about details in paintings. You might find it interesting.

I agree with you.. Details are whats fun to me and I get impatient when painting to get to them since I love doing them and feel they make a painting. These are great drawings. I love all the detail you put in. of course they would be birds. :)) I will go check out the post you mentioned.
These are just so detailed and beautiful!!! You done good, girl!!!
Wow Lisa, you really did a wondeful job on this study. Art is so fun when it leads us in different directions.
You are a true naturalist! I love your studies - they are all good. I too love the details but sometimes wish I could leave them out and just paint the bigger picture (landscapes.
Well I do love the details in these sketches. I'd have been disappointed if you had only done the bills. How would we have known which bird it belonged to? :)
You're a regular Audubon.
I like the way you focused your thoughts to come up with this great journal entry. Beautiful!
Very neat. This actually would be really great framed. I love the colors and the detail.
What fabulous bird beak/bill studies Lisa. I particularly like the kestrel.
It would have been pretty funny to see the bills without the heads. You're so good at details - they are one of my downfalls! Love the details on these sketches
I love the details in just about everything.
I get so caught up in them I often forget everything else.
Your bills and beaks are amazing...
I could learn so much from your journals....
you are a naturalist and an artist.
Beautiful....

Hi there Lisa, I have had this blog in a blogroll (all to itself) for some time now and I enjoy my visits to see your work. Perhaps it’s about time I started leaving comments here. Missing you on Greenbow btw but I can see what’s been keeping you busy :-)
I absolutely adore your studies with the notes in your handwriting too. They really do give me inspiration to draw every time I see them (just need the time). You have a wonderful eye and I look forward to a year of your artworks :-D
Hi Lisa, those pages are just fantastic!
Yes details are important. Your friend makes very beautiful pictures of nature BTW.
Your painting of bills /heads has turned out so well. It is always a pleasure to see your work and learn something about birds here.
