Hooded Crane

There has been great excitement in my neck of the woods in the birding world. The Hooded Crane that was first seen in Nebraska, then in Tennessee is now at Bee Hunter Marsh which is part of the Goose Pond Wildlife Area near where I live.
I can't tell you how rare and exciting this is...if it is true. True enough that we have seen it. It is here. The provenence of it's origin is the issue. Is it an escapee from a zoo or a private collection?  It has no tags, bands etc that are visible. It has been debated and investigated adnausium. No one can prove it was an escapee.  I am just thrilled to have seen this beautiful creature in the wild. I think it is a great wanderer.
I have some reeallllly bad photos of it. You can go here to see a decent picture of it when it was in TN. I am sure that someone with great camera gear will take a photo of it here this weekend, if it stays. There have already been people from surrounding states coming to see it.
I hope you have an exciting weekend too.

How exciting for you! Your drawing captures it well. I'm glad you got to see it before it left for regions unknown.

P.S. I visited a Nature Park Wednesday and I saw a stuffed example of that hawk that was in my yard this week. It was a Cooper's hawk. Two of them like to camp out in the tree over my birdfeeder now. Ooops.

How awesome for you to get to see this magnificent bird and your sketch is great. I remember when a crane of some sort came through our neck of the woods - the photographers were going crazy over it at Potter's Marsh.

Lisa.....I am so thrilled for you - and now, for all of us, and we can share some of the beauty of this bird thanks to your gorgeous drawing! I love all Cranes....but to see this fellow....gasp!!!!

I continue to be awed by Nature and her *creatures*.... a few weeks ago, I encountered a Red Fox - in the middle of Golden Gate Park...and have learned there also is an Owl and her babies... for this *City Girl*, having close encounters is pure magic! I was at Crissy Field yesterday and got some gorgeous shots of a Pelican, some seals and.....a Crane! (Though not hooded...)

I love your blog! Evey post is an adventure for me!

Hugs,

♥ Robin ♥

How fun to see a special bird not native to the area. I hope its going to be safe. You did a great drawing of it. I went to check out the bird picture and forgot to come back and comment.. oops. Thanks for the name of that duck on my blog post. I am so glad you know these names. Thanks..

Lisa, you did a fantastic job on this!! Wow!

I always thought the ones with the red heads were Sandhill Cranes. No matter, it's wonderful, and how exciting for you birders!
